The Employer just notified us officially that as of March Break any 10 month employee on Short Term Disability (called SSP by the employer) will not be paid their STD wages during the layoff period. That means they will need to apply for EI Sick Benefits during the periods of layoff.
The hours members are paid for Short Term Disability will count towards EI entitlement. The Union is filing a policy grievance on this issue. We would strongly encourage anyone who has been personally affected to file an individual grievance as well.
This new approach will apply to March Break, the summer layoff period and the Christmas layoff period.
